How it works

In plain terms.

Finasteride blocks 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. DHT is the hormone that gradually shrinks follicles in male-pattern hair loss. Less DHT at the scalp means follicles stop shrinking and many recover.

How to take it

  • One 1 mg tablet a day, with or without food, at any consistent time.
  • Keep taking it; the effect depends on continued use.
  • Do not crush or split tablets; women who are or may become pregnant must not handle broken tablets.

What to expect

  • Shedding slows within about 3 months.
  • Visible regrowth typically between 3 and 6 months; full effect at 12 months.
  • Stopping usually reverses gains within 6 to 12 months.

Not for

  • Women and children.
  • Anyone with a known allergy to finasteride or dutasteride.
  • Men who prefer a topical route can ask about the compounded topical blend.

Important safety information

Read before you start. Your prescriber reviews the full profile with you.

Finasteride (oral)

Finasteride is FDA approved for male-pattern hair loss. It lowers DHT, the hormone that shrinks hair follicles.

  • Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets. Finasteride can cause abnormal development of a male fetus. It is not for use by women or children.
  • Sexual side effects (decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems) occur in a small number of men and in rare cases have continued after stopping the medication.
  • Depression and mood changes have been reported. Tell your prescriber about any history of mood disorders and stop and call if your mood changes.
  • Report breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or other breast changes.
  • Finasteride lowers PSA levels. Tell any doctor ordering a PSA test that you take it.

This is not a complete list of side effects, warnings, or interactions. Read the full prescribing information or medication guide, and talk to your prescriber or pharmacist. Report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Questions about Finasteride 1 mg

Anything else, call (714) 215-4740.

Will it affect my sex drive?

A small percentage of men report lower libido or erectile changes. Most resolve on stopping; persistent cases have been reported. Tell your prescriber about any change.

Does it work on a receding hairline?

It works best at the crown and mid-scalp and is less predictable at the temples. Pairing it with minoxidil helps.

Does it affect PSA tests?

Yes, it roughly halves PSA. Tell any doctor ordering a PSA that you take finasteride.
